The essence of the Operation & IT Banking Talent Programme

Leading into the future with cutting-edge innovations and optimal execution

Information Technology is the primary process that keeps the bank working. At Operations & IT Banking we provide processing support to all our business units worldwide. The decisions we make have a major impact on the way we do business. Thanks to us, our customers receive the mortgages, credit cards and insurance policies that they have been promised by the ING?s sales divisions. Of course, this also means that they will instantly notice when processes do not run as planned.

Therefore we rely on a pro-active team that keeps us going and gives us the essential strategic advantage. Are you the ambitious, talented colleague we are looking for, eager to shape our future? Do you see the vital difference between good and better? Then we invite you to apply for the Operations & IT Banking Talent Programme, a tailor-made, three-year traineeship.

The curriculum is a unique opportunity for hands-on experience. In your first challenging project year you will find out which field suits you best. Next, you will expand your knowledge, skills and network in a two-year position. With cutting-edge innovations you will lead us into the future. By rapidly responding to changing customer demands, you will make sure we cross that finish line first.

Find out why Engineers work at ING Operations & IT Banking

As a technical student perhaps you never thought about joining a global financial services company. If so, we think you should know that ING offers many exciting career opportunities for engineers.

Information Technology is something we can?t do without. It?s the primary process that keeps a bank working. Operations & IT Banking provides processing support to all our banking divisions worldwide. Thanks to our back office processes our customers receive their mortgages, credit cards and insurance policies ? while this of course also means that when processes do not run as planned, they will instantly suffer the consequences.

In an extremely complex and dynamic field, our IT professionals are tasked to ensure that our clients can carry out their business with us simply, efficiently, and securely.

One of the greatest appeals for graduates with a technical background to start their career in the banking field is the fact that banks strongly depend on technical systems. It is essential to keep them running at all times. When internet banking systems for example are down for only five minutes, it immediately becomes an item on the news. A two day system failure might even cause bankruptcy. Just imagine 9 million customers not being able to do any banking transactions? Although banks are known for their legacy systems, we need to keep working on constant innovation and the development of new applications such as mobile banking. We need to keep pace with the new era of modern banking expectations, a huge challenge?

BEST Alumni working in ING Group

Marius Sălcudeanu, from Cluj-Napoca, Romania

Business Consultant in Operation & IT Banking / Commercial Banking Services

  • Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • University: Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania
  • Studied: Computer Science
  • Joined ING: 2008

How & why did you join ING?
I found out about the opportunities in ING through BEST, I applied on the website, and before I knew it I was in Amsterdam for an interview. I decided to join ING because of the traineeship programme that they are offering which includes several rotations on different assignments within the first 3 years and a significant amount of training (both technical and soft skills) which seems to me like the best way to start your career immediately after graduation.

How would you describe your experience in ING?
As a management trainee I am exposed to high-level projects and I am constantly encouraged to challenge the current way in which things work. I had the opportunity to see and work in several different areas and participated in projects like operational risk forecasting and mitigation, process optimization or setting up a new operating model. I feel that as a trainee in ING I am supported to move within the organisation according to my development needs and I also receive many hours of training out of which a lot on soft skills.

Have you traveled to other countries within your role?
I have traveled to Belgium several times for my main assignment but I also traveled to a few BEST general meetings as a company delegate, besides my regular work.

Dan Florescu, from Bucharest, Romania

International Management Trainee

  • Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • University: Politehnica University of Bucharest,Romania
  • Studied: Electrical Engineering
  • Joined ING: 2009

How & why did you join ING?
As someone wise once said "Your choices are half chance" - the same was with me applying for ING. I was looking for a company where to start working upon my graduation, preferably abroad, with a multinational environment and that would invest in my personal development while giving me challenging projects to work on and there it was ING. After applying on the website and doing the 4 online test I came to Amsterdam for 4 days to get to know more about the company and have 3 more rounds of interviews and assessments that I successfully passed and before boarding on the plane back home I had an offer in the pocket and a champagne bottle with me.

How would you describe your experience in ING?
In the 6 months so far in ING I have learned a lot about myself and had a great time meeting inspiring people from all around the world. Beeing an ING trainee is associated with being a top talent and a future leader of the company which leads to special attention that top management gives us (informal meetings where we discuss and debate the decisions of the company or get advices on future career steps). As well, you are allowed a big flexibility in choosing your assignments and career moves - I could switch from a highly top management project working in the Business Management of the Head of Operations and IT department of ING (14.000 people) to a very operational department. No matter which department or project you will choose the decision will be 100% yours and not imposed by someone else

A short profile of the company culture:

Operating in a highly competitive global market, our results can be attributed to our willingness to challenge conventional thinking. We pioneered the concept of the integrated financial services company, bringing banking and insurance together to benefit our customers and strengthen our business. Another example is ING Direct. This innovative marketing strategy & communication approach of retail banking started in 1995 and today ING Direct is a leading direct bank with over 15 million customers in 9 large countries.

Profile of the engineers and professionals the company is looking for:

- You're a can-do spirit with a passion for teamwork and a focus on results;

- You have (almost) completed your Master's degree and have no more than two years work experience. A technical background is preferred but not mandatory;

- You are interested in process management and the application of IT solutions. For the latter, we do not expect profound knowledge at the "bits and bytes level", but you must know what goes on in an IT environment (or can quickly master this knowledge);

- You are good at analysing problems and forming opinions;

- You are able to cope well with competing demands;

- You want to grow into a managerial position;

- During your studies you have developed your organisational, personal or managerial skills;

- Your curriculum vitae shows you are an enterprising individual with loads of initiative.

Typical career for hired engineers:

In your first year you work on two projects, each around 6 months. Each project is set up differently, so you get a good opportunity to familiarise yourself with the large work and organisational field of Ops&IT. Soon, you'll get personal responsibility and gain experience in project management and making (process) analysis. After this, you start your first one or two-year position as a project manager, business consultant or team leader of an operational unit. Later, you might enter management, or continue your development to become a high-value specialist.

During this three-year traineeship, you are supervised and coached by a career officer from the Talent Management division.

Personal and professional development is important within the ITP, each career track offering its own unique training programme.

Recruitment procedure:

Step 1: We assess your curriculum vitae, grades and letter. In the letter we're looking for:

- Why you're interested in financial services and why ING

- Your motivation for wanting to join the specific ITP track

Step 2: If your written application gets the thumbs up, we'll invite you to a test day.

- You will do a 75-minute English-language ability test

- If you meet the minimum requirements, you'll be asked to fill in a personality questionnaire, which takes about 20 minutes

- The test day takes place in Amsterdam, usually on a Wednesday.

Step 3: After the test day you will be interviewed by two interviewers.

- This takes place in Amsterdam, usually two days after the test day.

Step 4: Assessment by an external bureau

Step 5: Panel interview with management

Internal training's policy:

During your first year you will be offered various personal skill trainings together with your ITP peers. You will also take part in the ING International Graduate Programme: an exclusive three-week programme for ING trainees from all over the world. This programme focuses on getting to know ING and our winning performance culture. You will have the opportunity to broaden your network and to get to know the senior managers within ING. In year 2 we will provide you with tailor made training. From a job content perspective you will be assisted by your manager. Next to that you will receive specific coaching by your career officer.
